VIReC's VA/CMS Data for Research Project serves as the data custodian for Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and United States Renal Data System (USRDS) data for VA research use. The project warehouses and provides data from CMS and USRDS to VA researchers. In addition, the project serves the VA research community by providing education and assistance to VA researchers using these data and conducting research on Veterans’ use of Medicare and Medicaid services.
The VA/CMS Data for Research Project is funded by the VA Health Services Research and Development (HSR&D) Service, VA Information Resource Center (Project Numbers SDR 02-237 and 98-004).
VIReC is responsible for all CMS data used for VA research in accordance with VHA Directive 1153 and VHA Handbook 1153.01. Researchers using these data in the VA must have approval from VIReC and comply with all regulations regarding their research use in the VA.
