VIReC is looking for dedicated and enthusiastic people to join our team in improving Veteran healthcare and well-being through research. We currently have open positions in Data Knowledge and Documentation, VA REDCap Support and Customer Service, and on our Office for the Sustainment & Implementation of Research EHR Solutions (OSIRES) team. VIReC and OSIRES are based at the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital in the Chicagoland area. Location is negotiable, but all positions require work onsite at a nearby VA with some telework flexibilities. VIReC positions require <5% travel for meetings/events, while most OSIRES positions require site visits several times a year. Candidates must be U.S. Citizens. All positions are VA term appointments, renewable based on funding and performance. The targeted General Schedule (GS) pay range is GS-9 through GS-13. Starting pay is dependent on qualifications and experience.
Supervisory Data Knowledge & Documentation Specialist (GS-13)
VIReC is looking for a skilled VA data analyst with management experience to lead our Data Knowledge and Documentation team in supporting the use of VA electronic health record (EHR) data and other national VA databases while remaining heavily hands on with product development. This role blends leadership with deep, day-to-day engagement in building the analytic and educational resources that help VA researchers use national data effectively to improve Veteran health and health care. This position requires experience leading and managing teams, familiarity with the use of data in health services research, experience working with large databases, and advanced SQL skills.
As a Senior Data Knowledge and Documentation Specialist (70%), you will be:
Investigating VA healthcare data.
Developing insights about how those data support research.
Turning that knowledge into high quality documentation, technical reports, trainings, and other end user products.
As the DKD team lead (30%), you will be:
Supervising the Data Knowledge and Documentation team, including evaluation, training, and skills development.
Shaping VIReC’s data knowledge and documentation portfolio and guiding product strategy.
Supporting specialists as they move ideas from initial investigation through final documentation and dissemination.
Necessary skills and experience:
Degree and/or direct experience in health services research, epidemiology, health economics, or related social sciences.
Experience managing teams.
Experience leading research projects or large database evaluations.
5+ years of experience managing and analyzing VA data sources such as the CDW, Vital Status File, and/or other commonly used VA databases.
Demonstrable expertise in data management and/or data analysis using SQL.
Experience examining the quality and utility of large databases.
Data Knowledge & Data Documentation Specialists (GS-12–GS-13)
Data Knowledge and Data Documentation Specialists support the use of VA electronic health record (EHR) data and other national VA databases. This position requires advanced SQL skills, familiarity with the use of data in health services research and experience working with large databases. Incumbents will be responsible for a range of activities related to providing high-quality documentation, education, and consultative resources for VA data users in the following areas:
Data Documentation
Documents large VA databases, their contents, and structure.
Produces technical reports on topics related to data utilization, reliability, validity, and availability.
Collaborates with operations and field research partners to develop data methods resources.
Develops ideas for new products and topics for the VIReC portfolio.
Data Investigation and Analysis
Uses advanced data management and statistical methods to extract generalized insights for a broad analytical audience.
Develops data management and analysis methods to be made available to a wide variety of data users across the VA.
Education, Communication, and Training
Serves as an expert on VA data content and methods for data management and use.
Shares knowledge and expertise with VA data users who have a diverse range of experience and skills.
Develops training materials and national webinars to educate data users about VA data and its effective use.
Delivers high-quality presentations and consultations tailored to a range of audiences.
Leads junior analysts throughout all phases of data knowledge production.

VA REDCap Customer Experience Specialist (GS-11)
Join our dynamic team and help power an exceptional customer experience for VA REDCap users nationwide. HelpDesk & Customer Experience Specialists are on the front lines supporting researchers, solving problems, and shaping tools that make data work easier, faster, and better.
Responsibilities include:
Quickly to acknowledge, triage, and resolve VA REDCap HelpDesk questions, capturing details in our ticketing system.
Guide researchers and data users through effective, informed use of VA REDCap.
Collaborate creatively with the VA REDCap Support Team to develop tools and streamline workflows using SharePoint, MS 365, and more.
Track down resources that meet customer needs and clearly communicate what they need to know.
Spot patterns in customer questions and turn them into impactful FAQs, web content, and other communications.
Stay plugged into online community forums to strengthen engagement, understand user needs, and spark product improvements.
Necessary skills and experience:
Degree and/or direct experiesnce in health services research, epidemiology, health economics, or related social sciences.
Strong proficiency with Microsoft tools (Word, Outlook, Excel, Access, Teams, etc.).
Hands-on experience with REDCap, VA REDCap preferred.
Working knowledge of data collection and entry applications.
Reliable data management skills, including accurate data entry and timely reporting.
Outstanding customer service mindset with excellent verbal and written communication.
Proven track record of creating positive customer experiences through problem solving and active listening.
EHR System Integration & Support Specialists (GS-11–GS-13)
The ORD Office for the Sustainment & Implementation of Research EHR Solutions (OSIRES) supports the research enterprise in its use of the electronic health record (EHR). VA has resumed Federal EHR deployments on an accelerated schedule and OSIRES is looking to expand our team in support of both the research transition and the ongoing sustainment and optimization of research EHR use. We are seeking talented individuals to assist in areas such as EHR configuration and build, implementation and change management, field education and communication, end user adoption, and customer service.
Overarching responsibilities:
Assisting with functional design, development, system configuration, implementation, and support for research use of the Federal EHR.
Preparing correspondence, information/decision papers, training materials, and course of action analyses for a variety of audiences, including national leadership.
Skills and experience:
Experience in informatics, EHR implementation, or IT project management.
Ideal candidates will be familiar with the Oracle Health (Cerner) EHR, CPRS, or other commercial EHR systems.
