About the Project

VIReC's VA/CMS Data for Research Project serves as the data custodian for Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and United States Renal Data System (USRDS) data for VA research use and provides these data to VA researchers. It also provides education and assistance to VA researchers using these data to study Veterans’ use of Medicare and Medicaid services.

Data Oversight

VIReC is responsible for all CMS and USRDS data used for VA research in accordance with VHA Directive 1153. Researchers using these data in the VA must have approval from VIReC and comply with all regulations regarding their research use in the VA.

Assisting VA Researchers

VIReC is a resource for knowledge about CMS and USRDS data used for VA research. We develop and disseminate information about these data on our VA/CMS Data for Research Intranet site and assist VA researchers through pre-request consultations and our help desk services.

Visit the VA/CMS Data for Research Intranet site to learn more about the project, for details on data available, information on requesting data, and to view resources on CMS and USRDS data used for VA research, including data descriptions, documentation, cyberseminars, and more. This site is available to researchers with VA network access by copying and pasting the following URL into the browser: https://vaww.virec.research.va.gov/Index-VACMS.htm
