VIReC provides detailed and summary information on VA and Non-VA data sources of particular relevance to VA research. The VA maintains numerous national, VISN-level, and local facility data sources. (See Introduction to VA Data.) Other government agencies and non-profit organizations maintain databases with service-related information.

VA Data Sources

  • VA-CMS Data For Research
    • Patient Assessment Data
      Minimum Data Set (MDS) assessment data on residents of long-term care facilities certified to participate in Medicare/ Medicaid or operated by the VA.
    • MCBS
      Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS) provides a sample of aged, disabled, and institutionalized Medicare beneficiaries.
    • Medicaid
      Data available: person summary (PS), other services (OT), inpatient (IP), prescription drug (RX), long term care (LT).
    • Medicare
      Data for veterans found in the VHA cohort, stay-level data, institutional claims and non-Institutional claims data, data for all Medicare Beneficiaries.

  • ADUSH Monthly Enrollment File
    Assistant Deputy Under Secretary (ADUSH) Enrollment File provides National statistics on VHA expenditures, enrollment, and patients for use in forecasting enrollment, expenditures, and performing policy analysis.

  • BIRLS
    Beneficiary Identification & Records Locator System (BIRLS) - Death File is an extract of the BIRLS Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) database containing records of all beneficiaries.

  • DSS
    Decision Support System (DSS) data contains Local- or facility-level Production Databases and National Data Extract (NDE) SAS® datasets of financial and clinical data.

  • CDW
    Corporate Data Warehouse (CDW) is a national repository comprising data from several VHA clinical and administrative systems.

  • Medical SAS® Datasets
    Datasets on all national inpatient and outpatient services provided to VHA health care users.

  • NPCD
    National Patient Care Database(NPCD) is the VHA's centralized relational database that receives encounter data from VHA clinical information systems.

  • NPPD
    National Prosthetics Patient Database (NPPD) comprises transaction-level data for all orthotic, prosthetic and sensory devices and surgical implants dispensed to veterans nationwide.

  • PBM
    Pharmacy Benefits Management Database is a national database of information on all prescriptions dispensed within the VHA System beginning with fiscal year 1999.

  • RAI-MDS
    Resident Assessment Instrument - Minimum Data Set (RAI-MDS): the foundation of screening, clinical and functional status elements of the comprehensive assessment for residents of long-term care facilities certified to participate in Medicare and Medicaid and VA Long-term Care or Nursing Home Programs.

  • VistA
    VistA is an integrated system of software applications that directly supports patient care at VHA healthcare facilities. VistA applications generate the clinical and administrative data that support day-to-day operations and contain patients' medical and healthcare utilization histories, including data on demographics, episodes of care, medicines, practitioner information, diagnoses, procedures, etc.

  • VHA Vital Status File
    Combines death dates from all sources currently available to VA researchers, including the PTF (VA Inpatient), BIRLS, Medicare Vital Status, and Social Security Administration (SSA) death file.

  • VETSNET
    Veterans Service Network (VETSNET) Corporate Mini Master File consists of selected fields from the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) Corporate Database.

Data Sources Outside the VA

Databases maintained by other government agencies and non-profit organizations that contain data on topics such as: traumatic head and brain injury, toxic and hazardous substances, real-time tracking of injured, personnel, manpower, training, financial data, etc.
